As per the concept of Kon Ran the game, most of the world itself is a sandbox to be molded and shaped by all of the players. Its an open world, and the characters will eventually find that this world is one for them to explore - and players will be helping to shape it even as they dig deeper into its secrets.
So, without further ado. Ladies and gentlemen, the world of Kon Ran.
It looks awfully familiar doesn't it...and guess who's going to be helping with shaping this world? That's right: you. After all, this isn't quite the Earth many characters will remember...
SOME INFO ON THE WORLD BUILDING TO KEEP IN MIND (i.e. most of this particular stuff is mod-mandated, sorry folks):
A knowledge of history isn't required, but it doesn't hurt to look stuff up for it. Not everyone is insane like certain people on the mod team Ni.
The year that world history starts to diverge from ours is 1793. Make sure to keep that in mind when discussing various countries' development up to and including this earth's 2012.
World War II did not happen. Albeit, the European theater of the war happened (and thus is called the War of the European Fascists), but the Asian theater did not (Japan never invaded Manchuria, Pearl Harbor didn't happen) and hence the Asian outcome of the war never happened.
Mods have complete mod dibs on China and certain dibs on Japan. While player imput will definitely be allowed, it is up to the mods whether to include certain suggestions or not.
Any major local businesses/spots/houses/etc. in Kon Ran will also be placed on the map for The City. Any businesses in other countries will be placed on the world map. Yup.
Oh, and no matter where a character goes, they will still look like their obviously real selves.
Any questions/comments/confusion? Just ask in the feedback thread!
Government type: Constitutional monarchy, modeled on the centralized British bicameral parliamentary system, with some differences. Among the differences is that the monarch (currently the Wanwu Emperor), along with their ceremonial duties, exercises considerable parliamentary and executive power: the monarch is the tiebreaker vote of the Imperial Cabinet and the upper house of the government when needed, can appoint certain officials and decide on certain laws without the advice of the government, directly 'owns' certain provinces and cities, and is even responsible for deciding certain judicial cases. The emperor also shares executive power with an elected prime minister, who presides over both houses of government; the prime minister and the houses of parliament rule in the emperor's name over most matters of state.
Economy: Market economy, also based on the British system.
Differences in Kon Ran world: -The Qing dynasty ultimately never fell. In fact, the fate of the Qing dynasty was altered in 1793, when the Macartney Embassy successfully petitioned the Chinese government to open official relations with Great Britain. Due to this, the Opium Wars never happened. Instead, Britain's technology, trade, and government mores were slowly infused into Chinese life until, by the 1870s, China had once more become a powerful, modern, constitutional entity which called itself the Imperial Qing Republic, or the IQR. -Likewise, the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894 didn't quite happen in the same way; After several skirmishes, the Japanese and the Chinese ended in a draw, with China and Japan conquering and splitting the peninsula in half. The gentleman's agreement, plus China's power, averted both the World War I skirmishes of both countries and nearly the whole of the Pacific theater of World War II (save for troops sent due to alliances). In other worlds: World War II basically never happened; the conflict is known as the War of the European Fascists. -Despite this, China hasn't been entirely at peace, making its own land grabs in the name of imperialism. Aside from China basically owning half of Korea, in 1867 China became the proud owners of a little-known Russian province called Alaska after the Russians offered to sell it. Despite attempts by other countries to take it away, Alaska is still a (autonomous) province of China. The same applies to the (also at varying degrees of autonomy and even full-on commonweath-esque independence, in accord with the "British" way) regions of Vietnam, Nepal, Tibet, Mongolia, and the eastern half of what we know as Kazakhstan. Hong Kong and Macau are also autonomous, for reasons similar to our own world. -Kon Ran (混乱, Hǔnluàn) is one of the major cities in the modern IQR, with a population second only to Hong Kong. Over the centuries, changed hands between the Chinese, the Japanese, the Koreans and even, at one point, the British, due to its location. Currently, it is firmly in Chinese hands, but its name surely reflects its history - after all, it means "confusion".
