→ In Character ← Basic → Kon Ran! What is that? Kon Ran is two things. First, it is the name of the game! And second, it is the name of the city that every character wakes up in - and forced to call home. → What exactly is going on here? Well, your character has suddenly woken up in a place where they are being told point blank that they are not who they believe themselves to be. In fact, according to the people of this world, your character is a completely different person altogether and has been this whole time! That's right. All of your character's memories, personality quirks, friendships, battles, powers, everything about them and their existence as they knew it before they woke up, is really little more than an elaborate fantasy world, a vivid dream. The official diagnosis of why you're now like this, according to the doctors who have been treating your character(s) in the hospital they woke in, is dissociative identity disorder in response to psychological trauma. And what is that trauma, you may ask? Well...the doctors aren't talking. You don't need to relive that horrific event so soon after you woke up...! → Wait, so my character's whole life in canon was a lie!? No, no, that's not right, they must have been kidnapped or something!! Well, its up to your character to try and figure out the truth. Are they really Super Awesome Shoujo Character 5, trapped in another reality? Or are they in fact Normal Person 43847398 living out an act of psychosis? ...Oh, who are you kidding? You know who you are! There's no mystery in that part! At least you're pretty sure about that. Right? Wait... In any case, now you're stuck in this place for the moment, with a new identity and a new life you apparently forgot you had. Now it's a question of figuring out what to do from there. Do you go back to your family and friends and try to rebuild your 'real' identity? Or do you return to your 'fake' identity and fight what's been given to you? Or maybe something in between?... Characters and Identities -About Your Completely Fake Identities- → Ok, ok, so my character's just been told they're some stupid normal person. Wait until I burst out the eye lasers and magical girl transformations and the awesome new armor I go- Ahahahaha, hold up there, Slick! You're not going to be impressing anyone. → Wait, do I get to keep anything of my powers and equipment?! If its supernatural, magical, or anything that would be considered extremely abnormal or beyond reasonable human capacity, its disappeared for some unknown reason. Same with any technology one might have had on them, be it alien, futuristic or even just advanced by three months. However, that doesn't mean everything is gone. Any kind of experience or ability that can potentially be achieved by normal humans is not taken away, such as knowledge, skills, training and physical and mental capacity. It's all about compensating what you don't have with what you still retain, which, while irritating for power-happy characters, does not leave most characters at a disadvantage, even de-powered. To give an example, someone like Goku would lose all of his Saiyan abilities, bottomless stomach and energy-based attacks. He would, however, still be able to harness his considerable martial arts skills, and would still have some strength and speed as befitting a martial arts master. Likewise, a tech-based character such as Tony Stark would lose his Iron Man suit upon arrival, but he would retain the knowledge of how to rebuild it. → ...Er, what's with all the struck out language? Did something happen with powers? Yes indeed! As of November 2012, characters can now keep one power with a maximum of 25% of its original strength. We're not sure how. The Viceroy did it and we're just going to go along with it. → POWERS!? YAY! I CAN GET BACK MY CHARACTER'S WORLD-BLOWING-UP PO- Of course said power that is kept has to be within reasonable limits. Sorry, folks with the ability to end reality or erase people from existence on a whim! To show how this works: your character - let's go with Sailor Saturn - can retain one power. She can retain her ability to heal, albeit it takes longer than normal. She can regain the ability to transform into Sailor Saturn, though she will not be as resilient to hits and attacks as she normally is. Or, Saturn can regain the ability to summon her Silence Glaive, though she will not be able to access her world-ending powers and will only be able to pull off a weakened version of one of her other attacks (Silence Glaive Surprise, Silent Wall, or Death Reborn Revolution). → Wait, but do my characters lose any of their memories on arriving in this world, as well as powers!? Nope! Your characters don't lose any of their memories of their clearly fake life. Which is why your characters are being put in therapy to begin with. Because those memories are fake. Clear as day, yes, but totally fake. At least that's the opinion of the doctors. → But my character is an alien/vampire/animal/robot/needs a specific item to survive! There's no way that can just be changed! Well, no...and yes. If your character is an alien or animal or has a very decidedly un-human appearance, the good news is, you and your fellow unfortunates don't see any physical difference! For example, Michelangelo from TMNT still looks like his old half-shelled heroic self to other player characters. However, to the NPCs - basically everyone else - he will look, just to give an example, markedly different. Of course if said non-human character is a giant, like a Transformer, they'll be shrunken down to a maximum of six feet. Likewise, anyone who has a prosthetic arm or some physical attachment which allows them to survive for any reason will still retain them, but they will not have any extra functions other than those which allows the person to live (unless, of course, said function is the one power that they end up retaining; see the above question about powers). Just like with poor Michelangelo, the chest mechanism Tony Stark uses to survive will not be visible to NPCs, and it will not send out energy blasts. Supernatural characters like → So my non-human person looks like a human to the NPCs. Do I have to use a PB for them then? Or do I just need a few icons showing that they would look like? Ultimately, it is your choice! You can use a set of PBs, or a few icons, either one. But, you don't have to! → Well, screw you and your mother and this whole stupid 'I'm really someone else and hey look no powers' bullcrap, I'm leaving this stupid place! Unfortunately, that will be a problem, initially. For one, your character can't go back to the planet you claim to be from - Kon Ran is their home, of course! For another, they're being tracked. That's right. Your character has an ankle monitor on them, and they are being electronically prevented from leaving the city by the police. At least for now, per court order. Who knows what insane shenanigans your characters might get into otherwise! → Can't I disable it? How do I leave the city if I can't? The monitor can be disabled, but be warned: the police will hunt your characters down and they will be put in jail if and when your characters are caught. Attempting to leave the city will also be difficult, even if you've disabled your monitor, since they will be patrolling the city borders for those like your character. And of course, if you don't disable it and try to leave, you will be caught and escorted back to your home. → So I'm basically trapped in this city. What in the world is my character going to do!? Have no fear! The city is pretty big, and this handy dandy map will help you with moving your character around. Said map is also downloaded onto everyone's communicator, so that no one gets lost. → A communicator? Our characters get one? Yup! And they look like this. At keast the doctor-issued ones do. The main point of the communicators is to primarily allow the doctors to conduct therapy on your characters, but of course your characters are more than welcome to talk to each other any old time they want. They can do other things with it, as well - play games with each other with the software, surf the Internet (though searching for sites about the history of Kon Ran or its world always seem to come up blank or 404'd for some reason...) or even try to hack into the comm's network or make their own, completely away from the prying eyes of the doctors (though both are pretty difficult to do unless one is extremely well-versed in hacking and computers)! Just try not to lose or break the communicators - doing so will cost your character a good deal of money to replace, since they are specially-made. And someone will know if you need a replacement, so be careful! → Wait, 'doctor-issued ones'? You mean there's more than one type of communicator? That is correct! In order to limit the doctors' Most incoming characters will generally have a chance to snag one of their own, provided they aren't outwardly psychotic or evil. They just have to befriend Donatello, or the right person who will nudge them in Donatello's direction. → Is is safe to assume that characters have access to Don's Network after a day or so? Yes! Feel free to handwave that he contacted them at some point and got them hooked up. → Do the phones have voicemail? Can we set up inboxes for their voicemail in their journal? Yes, and yes! → Is there anything else I should know? Do the doctors give me anything else aside from the communicators? One thing, yes. As of September 2012, all characters believed to be coming out of their comas are now being given a vaccination before they fully come to. If questioned, the doctors will say it is for a disease termed TSEVID (pronounced "SAY vid"), or "Influenza D". This vaccine is given in the spine, so new characters will likely feel some back pain upon waking up, but will not get sick. -Your Completely Real Identities- → Ok, so I apparently have this new identity because my whole life was a lie. What does this new identity entail? In-universe, the doctors give you all of your personal effects and information upon waking up, so that you can go off and restart your happy little life. Out of character, the mods will give you three pieces of information about your character's true identity upon your character's acceptance into the community:
All three of these pieces of information will be decided by the mods, via a randomizing generator (for names and occupation) and dice rolls (for family NPC). After that, well, what you do with that identity is completely up to you, the player. → ...Wait, I can do whatever I want with the identity I'm given!? Can I make up a fake history and everything for them if I want to!? That's right! What you do with the identity is up to you. Think of this identity your character is given as that of an OC - and their life is something you can build to your heart's content. And part of the fun is to see how well your character can pass (or, well, fail to pass) themselves off as said OCs as they simultaneously try and figure out what is going on. And the other part is - naturally - to figure out the dirt on pasts and truths of their new identities. Perhaps this true identity has a dark secret that they were trying to cover up. Maybe they lived a double life. Maybe they were allergic to peanuts. Anything and everything could be ripe for player and even mod plots. And maybe - just maybe - those pasts might hold clues to your character's current predicament. Obviously, these sandbox OCs have their limits. The first being, none of them had powers or anything of that sort, so your characters don't need to waste time trying figuring out if they have them. The second being, if you're not sure about something you want to put in your new identity's life story, ask a mod first, especially if it is something that might affect other characters and their identities, or has long-lasting effects on the game plot. And, if you wish to initiate a player plot based on something you've come up with for said identity, put it up in the plot post; again, even a small plot could wind up as something that could have game-wide effects. → Do our characters actually look like the people the NPCs all claim them to be? They do! Characters who find that photos or any visage of their new identities will find they look exactly like they do, down to any kind of scars, tattoos or unusual physical trait your character might have. Animals, robots, and non-human characters will also find that the human form that the NPCs see them as are identical to their supposed original selves as well. → Wait a second! How come my character's job is as a lawyer!? My character's still in high school! There's no way they could pass off as someone that old or with that knowledge! Do they get aged up or anything? Or... No, your character stays the same age. As to why they would be a lawyer or any job and still look young enough to need parental supervision - well, the NPCs will simply chalk it up to having youthful looks to begin with. After all, you always looked that young, even before your coma → Er. Actually, I have a slight problem with the job my character was given. I don't think it's a good idea for my character to have this particular job...is it possible I can opt for a different one? NO. YOU MAY NEVER ASK TO CHANGE ANYTHING EVER. ..Actually, no, you can. While a lot of times RNG is lolawkward, we totally understand that sometimes, the results of RNG rolls can take muns way out of their comfort zone of playing for any variety of reasons, and making you keep those RNG choices if that's the case wouldn't be right to do you, the player. If that's the case, just contact a mod, explain the situation and the job will be re-rolled for you! → Can a character ever quit their job? They can! But why would they? After all, they've been doing this for some time, and if they do quit, they'll have to find another job! → Do our characters have to play out their new identity's life? My character would never stand for being mistaken as someone else or pretending to be them just so they aren't seen as crazy! You don't have to at all! Your character can deny their new identity to their heart's content and continue on their way as they were before. Naturally this will have some IC consequences, since the doctors are trying to aid your characters in not denying their new, true identities. Even if your character isn't dangerous or otherwise causing problems, there are people in Kon Ran who don't like your characters parading around when they're clearly crazy... -NPCs, Family and Otherwise- → Ok, so we get our own family NPC. And we control them? We can do anything we want with them? Pretty much! They're basically like a Tamagotchi, if it were alive, in the same house, and getting itself involved in your character's lives. You can name them and give them a background, just like your new identity, and you can decide their relationship with your character. The family NPC can be supportive of your character, and even decide to help because your character really isn't their sibling/parent/friend/spouse/etc. if you wish. They might make posts on your character's communicator if you wish. On the other hand, you can also make them fight your character every step of the way, trying to prevent them from doing things, or just generally be a nuisance to everything you do. Your character can let them help, or ignore them, or fight with them! The only thing you can't do with impunity to the family NPCs is injure or kill them. Somehow your family NPC manages to survive, thanks either to timely medical and police intervention or dumb luck. Trying to kill your family NPC, or attacking and injuring them, will also get the police involved, so if your character commits violence on their family NPC, be prepared for what might happen next! → Er. Actually, I have a slight problem with the NPC my character was given. I don't think it's a good idea for my character to have this particular NPC...is it possible I can ask for a different one? Absolutely! We totally understand that sometimes, the results of RNG rolls can take muns out of the comfort zone. Just like with the job situation, hit up the mods and explain the situation and the NPC will be re-rolled for you! → Can a character ever cut ties with their NPC? At the moment, they can't, at least not fully. After all, these are friends and family! They care about your character and want them to get better! They can't just abandon your character when they need help! → What about the mod-controlled, non-family NPCs? Who are they? They are, in no particular order:
OOC Information → Ok, I'm interested! But, what do we post and where? Is this a journal-based or comm-based game? It is a community-based game, meaning you don't have to post in your journals! All real-time IC posts and threads between characters on their devices go into ![]() ![]() ![]() → Ok then, what kind of characters can we apply for here? As a panfandom game, pretty much any kind of character! Manga, anime, movies, books, TV, you name it, we allow it! Robots, vampires, animals, gods, you name it, we're pretty much cool with it! Obviously there are some limitations on who can be applied for when it comes to certain categories of characters, such as:
→ How many characters can I app into the game? Currently, the maximum limit is 5, with a limit of 2 characters from the same canon. → I want to play a character from a game/show/book that just came out/there's a sequel to this canon that came out and I want to canon update! Can I? At the moment, there is a thirty day hold period from the day of English release* for characters from recently released canons, in order to prevent possible character squatting for characters from particularly popular canons. After thirty days, players may reserve and apply for new characters, or canon update current characters in-game, from these canons. If said characters are major characters with major updated spoilers, we ask players to cut-text any posts/applications or mark any comment threads they have which contains spoilers, to be marked as such for other players on a temporary basis of time to be determined by the mods. Mainly because there are people who haven't played/seen said new/updated canons yet and are avoiding spoilers as a result, who might be spoiled on accident looking through the comms without the warnings - and that would be bad! *The exception is if it turns out there is no English release for said games/shows/movies/etc. and there is likely not to be one. For canons who might fall into this category, just shoot a note to the mods to ask about it! → What if my character is dead in canon? SURPRISE! THEY'RE ALIVE AGAIN!...No, really, they are alive again. Just go with it. → My character has a pet/Pokemon/familiar that travels with them. Are they allowed into the game also? No. Any animal companions of any type would need to be applied for separately. The only exception to this is if the animal in question is vital to keeping the character alive and is irreplaceable in that regard. To give an example for what would be seen as vital to use this exception, a character from His Dark Materials would need their (invisible to NPCs) daemon since the daemon is basically a piece of their soul; without it they would die and become a soulless zombie. → Can I have my character killed in this game? What happens if they die? They are dead....for a minimum of one week. For some reason, they return to life with seemingly no ill effects. At least, at first. However, make sure to ask the mods before killing someone off. And if a character dies more than 4 times, something will happen. As to what, well...that's a secret you might not want to find out. → I want to canon update my character! How do I go about doing that? Well, you can! You just have to inform the mods about it. But when it does happen, your character will seemingly disappear from the city, for a minimum of three days.and when they come to, they will be back in the hospital, just like they were when they first woke in Kon Ran. According to the doctors, this will be because they relapsed into a coma, and thus had to be returned to the hospital for monitoring. → I like sex and violence like I like coffee and biscuits - hooray for adult content! Is this the game for me? Well! Whatever floats your boat, I suppose. However...this is a PG-13 game. While we understand people will probably want to have sex or commit violent crimes if they're villains, we will need you to put any kind of sexual or any particularly violent encounter or injury (i.e. being on the level of a decent amount of blood, broken limbs, large gashes, and the like) underneath an DW cut and accompany it with a warning. Also the other half of the password for the application is kitten. Also, there are some actions that are absolutely not allowed in the game at all, such as rape, underage sex, graphic torture, incest, bestiality, maiming and any other graphic sexual taboo or explicit act of violence not mentioned here. If you want a game that allows you to engage in those types of acts, this is definitely not that game. → I want to do a pregnancy plot. Can my character get pregnant? As long as they're female, yes. And yes, you are reading this correctly. We do allow pregnancy plots. Your female characters can get pregnant! However, keep in mind that in this world, while its one thing for your characters to become pregnant, they may find that staying that way is another thing entirely... → What's the minimum age for applying to Kon Ran? The minimum age for applying is the minimum age to register on Dreamwidth - 13! → Is there a grace period for dropped characters? Yes! Characters that have been dropped will not be reservable or appable for one week from their drop post. This is both in consideration of the mun who may have second thoughts on dropping the character as well as the other players who have had CR with noted dropped character to adjust to the drop. → I have changed my mind about dropping a character. Do I have to reapply? If you retract your drop within a week after your original drop date, no, you will not have to reapply. Just contact one of the mods and let them know that you would like to retract your drop. However, if it is after the grace period, then yes, you will have to reapply. → What happens when a character gets dropped? When a character is dropped, ICly the character goes into a coma, similar to a character in hiatus. However, they don't wake up, and if its after the grace period? Let's just say that any character still in game who wants to find them them will discover that they won't be able to, with hospital staff either refusing to disclose anything or claiming they weren't there to begin with. → If I am reapping a character I've had in the game before, can I keep their previous in-game CR? They can! And they even keep their identities, NPCs, the whole shebang. It will be as if they never left Kon Ran! Which they didn't - they just fell back into their coma. → I'm apping a character who's already been played in-game...by another player! Do I have to have their identity and CR... Nope! If you want to, that's ok, but your character will get a new identity and NPC. That's right - there is more than one person who looks the same in the city. → My application was declined, but I would still like to reapply for that character at some point. Is that an option? Yes, you are allowed to reserve and/or reapply for a character two weeks from the date of your decline. This is to allow other potential applicants a chance to apply as that character. → What is the Activity Check for this game? It will be once a month. But have no fear, the AC is lenient! The mods will require one piece of activity from players, which can be comprised of any of the following:
Players can only fail one activity check before they are removed from the game. Players can request a save for one month if they need to; then they will have to do three pieces of activity to fulfill the save. However, if they still fail the next month's activity check, they will be automatically removed from the game. The only exemption on the monthly activity checks will be given to those who took hiatus during the month and who can prove that they posted in the hiatus post. → What are the rules? Are there any rules? The rules are right over here! Please make sure you read them before you apply, along with this F.A.Q. page! Otherwise, you won't be allowed into the game! I'm going to say that with the the things that get carried over, like scars and tiny reactor arcs and the like, it would carry over into the game.

But to answer your question as I get a link of the intended communicator picture up - they are special phones which look suspiciously just like the Microsoft KIN One, for those who might know of it.

I'll say yeah. Anything that was normal, had no powers, etc. would be among the items the doctors give back to the characters upon waking.

While I know that he would appear humanized to NPCS, would he still be able to just be text on screen to play characters, or would he need a human body? (Or be able to acquire something like that later in game?)

Of course she can still bring her deck, and there's nothing stopping anyone from making the technology from scratch for this world... ;D

It would depend. If the silent protagonist has a defined personality revealed through their canon (be it from conversations with others, implied by other people, actions in canon, etc.), and/or have supplements which help flesh out and develop their personality (For example, if you apped Mario from any of his RPG series where he never actually speaks, or the characters from the Persona series), they are ok to apply!

sorry for double post, not thinking properly right nowFang has this on her shoulder in canon. It's basically a brand made by the fal'Cie to show she's its l'Cie and has been bestowed powers. Will it still be in the game, or completely taken out?

I see that there's an Eighth Doctor currently in the game, and an Eleventh and Second Doctor in on reserve.
.... Is there... going to be a limit on Doctors, do you think? Because I have an absolute weakness for RPs like this and was thinking about tossing in a reserve for Ten, here.
no subject
Actually, no! There will be no Doctor limit in this game.

When a character is dropped, is there anything specific that "happens" to them? Like, do the non-player-controlled NPCs forget they were ever there or anything of the sort? Are they just...gone?
....I need to gauge how much trouble Robb is going to get into very soon.
Thanks in advance!

In terms of being brothers in their fake lives (canon), characters would consider themselves to be related to each other, since in canon they are brothers and they would remember that they were brothers in canon. Waking up in Kon Ran wouldn't change the fact they remember having been brothers.
As for Kon Ran, keep in mind that in terms of the RNG, the chances of Lovino and Felliciano being related to each other to begin with in their real lives in Kon Ran (i.e. having the doctors saying "Oh your brothers for real too!") are not very good and especially in the case of being brothers
unless the RNG god (PRAISE IT) bids it to be acceptable that they are in fact really brothers after all in Kon Ran. When it comes to the RNG, they are more likely to have brother NPCs in that regard. However, this does not mean they aren't related to each other period forever and ever, even with the dictates of RNG
(OFFER BURNT SACRIFICES FOR ITS WORD IS LAWWWWW). They could be cousins, half-brothers, blood brothers, brothers whose parents got a divorce brothers from other mothers - ultimately, if you wanted to put into their backstory that they are still brothers in some capacity, and you can make it work? We are totally ok with it. :DI hope that helps, my friend with the very Mario Bros-esque 'stache!

The character has a well fleshed-out personality and is very much workable as a muse, but he doesn't have a name. Could I app him under a fanmade name (I like calling him Kai), or would he have to just go by his completely real identity's name, or is he just unappable?
For reference, I'm talking about the boy from Draw With Me --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvjZ6VkLuCM

Much like Scout in-game is really just RED Scout, since as far as I can tell TF characters also also don't reveal real names, rofl. If that makes sense!I hope that helps!
